Cranky/Preachy
There’s an old expression: a conservative is a liberal who’s been mugged.
I think there’s a correlative to that. I think a liberal is a conservative who’s been laid off, or whose job has just been outsourced to Mexico or India so a corporation can reduce its overhead. Or a conservative who’s just been diagnosed with a serious illness that his health insurance refuses to pay for. Or whose son or daughter has been killed in combat in some profit-driven war. Maybe a liberal is a conservative who’s tired of rooting for the bully, who’s tired of rewarding cruelty and heartlessness.
Maybe a liberal is a conservative who finally starts to think for himself.

What’s Tom Wolfe’s line? “A liberal is a conservative who’s spent a night in jail.”

Damn, that’s a good one.
I guess that’s why he’s Tom Wolfe and I’m writing short stories about scuba-diving robots.
